Le drammatiche foto del salvataggio di Alex Zanardi ad opera del safety team della C.A.R.T. che intervenendo prontamente e con grande competenza sono riusciti a tenere in vita il pilota (grazie anche ad una cintura che ha fermato l'impressionante emorralgia) concludono il reportage sulla gara del Lausitzring. L'incidente (clicca qui per il video) è avvenuto alla fine della corsa proprio mentre Alex era in testa (il campionato al quale era tornato dopo la fallimentare esperienza in F1 con la Williams lo aveva visto sempre relegato nelle retrovie) e si apprestava ad uscire dai box. Probabilmente per un suo errore (troppa foga...) ha perso il controllo della sua vettura mentre usciva dai box ed è finito di traverso sulla pista proprio mentre sopraggiungeva Alex Tagliani (un nome una garanzia....) che lo ha centrato a 350 kmh. In calce a questa pagina vi è una intervista (in inglese) ad Alex Zanardi rilasciata solo un anno dopo l'incidente in occasione dell''ultima gara C.A.R.T. svolta sull' ovale che da un'immagine perfetta dello spirito e della simpatia del mitico pilota che è tornato a deliziarci con i suoi perfetti Donuts nel campionato mondiale Turismo. In quella gara Alex ha percorso gli ultimi giri che gli mancavano nella tragica gara del 15 settembre 2001.

Question: Can you remember the accident and the things happening after that?
Zanardi: My recollection really comes back with awakening in the Berlin clinic.
Question: Who did inform you, what really had happened?
Zanardi: That was done by my wife in a very gentle manner, because I was influenced by very strong medicine.
Question: It was said, that you had had only one litre of blood within your body after the accident . . .
Zanardi: I have already applied for a German passport, because I have got so much German blood in my veins. But by the loss of blood there had been the danger of my brain and other organs being damaged.
Question: Who did give back your courage to face life ?
Zanardi: I have never lost it. I am thinking of that, when I have got difficulties with my prothesises. I am a great optimist.
Question: Is it correct, that your wife had ordered a car for you with manual accelerator already in the hospital?
Zanardi: She simply had done that. It was a extremely difficult situation, but it intensifies my love to her. She simply had said: The first thing Alex will do, when awakening again, is driving a car.
Question: How does your son Nico cope with the fact, that his daddy is actually the best, but a little bit slower than others?
Zanardi: No, I am already winning concerning that. I have bought a motor-cycle with four wheels.
Question: What are you doing now, in which things are you involved?
Zanardi: I am very proud, when people tap on my shoulder in the streets. Life is great and it is worth living. I ride my motor-cycle, I go to the bank and into the cinema. It is really important, not to hide. If somebody is ashamed to show himself to others, he already had lost. I often think of holding the steering wheel of a racing car in my hands again, but that will be something different.
